Who don’t love tea and pakora on a rainy day, when monsoon splash is freshening the air around you. Undoubtedly, its God’s bless full mercy to provide us instant relief from scorching heat.

Monsoon, here in West Bengal, usually starts in July and lasts up to September every year. This is also the time when moisture is high in air and increases the humidity. People living in cities are more affected due to high humidity than those living in country side.

And if you want to beat the heat and humidity, then this is the right time for you to escape in coming weekends this monsoon. Yes! you don’t required more than a weekend to get detour from your busy monotonous life. Else plan your trip to other parts of India availing best offers.

There are some amazing weekend getaways available in backyard of Bengal if you’re living near Kolkata. Here are my favorite four budget friendly weekend getaways to relax and rebuild your energy to feel again alive.

1. DIGHA

Beaches are most preferred destination to get rid of heat in monsoon. And Digha is most popular beach destination in the West Bengal. It is 185 km from Kolkata.

Dhigha Sankarpur

Digha comes under East Midnapore district and situated at Northern end of the Bay of Bengal. Mainly two beaches are there, Old Digha and New Digha. My recommendation is Old Digha.

 How to reach

Drive through car takes around 4 hours to reach Digha. Well! It also has easy connectivity with Bus and trains. Both A/c and non A/c buses with affordable prices available from Dharamtala, Kolkata. Most of the buses departs in night from Dharamtala. Some lefts in morning too. You can also take train route which I believe is more comfortable option as Duranto trains are too available now. Moreover, If you have time in hand and want to make the trip more memorable, you can also avail the facility of Helicopter Services costing around Rs 2,500/- for one-way journey. Helicopter service are available from local flying club on weekly basis.

Things to do and see

You can enjoy the quality time with your family at beach. Apart from swimming, there are some attractive options like parasailing, Jet king is also started at Digha. You can also visit nearby Marine Aquarium and Amarbati Park. Spending an afternoon at nearby Pine Forest and shopping at evening on beach side is also great experience.

Where to stay

Digha is a town full of resort and hotels. Many near to seaside accommodation options available at affordable prices. Preferred ones are those near to Old Digha. Popular budget hotels for staying with family are Hotel Rohini International, Hotel Dolphin, Hotel Blue View, Saikatabasa – Digha.

2. MANDARMANI

Mandarmani is seaside village in East Midnapore of West Bengal. It is 180 km from Kolkata and rapidly growing with hotels and resorts. Mandarmani is one of longest drive-able beaches of India as it stretches up to 13 km.

How to reach

Cars are best mode to travel to this place. It takes 3.5-4 hours’ drive from Kolkata to reach there. However buses bound towards Digha can be also taken but you have to get down at Chawalkhola and took local rickshaw from there. You can also book buses online.

Tip: Remember regular rickshaws available at Kolkata are not running there but open rickshaw known as Bhan Rickshaw

Things to do and see

You can enjoy the breathtaking view of Sunrise and Sunset while walking at the beach. You can also join the groups going to visit Mohana (Estuary) at evening. This trip is organized by locals at affordable prices.

Where to stay

Mandarmani is growing fast with new hotels and resorts. This is why plenty of options for budget accommodations is available. You can also book the hotel of your choice online. Popular ones are Hotel Sonar Bangla. The SANA Beach Resort, Bombay Beach Resort, Victoria Beach Resort, Aqua Marina Drive Inn, The Candlewood Park Beach Resort & Spa.

3. TAJPUR

Tajpur is newest tourist attraction. It is also located in East Midnapur of West Bengal and near to Digha. It is 170 km from Kolkata. Tajpur is being famous and attracting tourist due to clean beaches which are less crowded. This is recommended to those who wants a peaceful weekend being away from outside world.

How to reach

Car ia again the best option here. It takes around 3.5-4 hours drive to reach Tajpur. Bus service which are available at very affordable prices.  You can take any bus bound to Balisai but need to get down at Bilsai. You can get local transport from Bilsai to reach Tajpur.

Things to do and see

Thanks to is gaining popularity, you can enjoy various adventures apart from enjoying the beauty of beaches. Coastal Biking, Sea Rafting and Artificial Rock Climbing are the various adventure now available at Tajpur. You can visit the Mohana here too at the Sunset.

Unlike the above two destination, it has less option for budget accommodation. But here are some popular places to stay with your family. Tajpur Beach Resort, Sabuj Saikat Resort, Lakeview Resort

4. SUNDERBANS

If beaches do not excite you or you want to embrace the nature more closely, then Sundarbans is perfect destination to spend your weekend. Sunadarbans is well famous for its divine mangrove forest. It is spread over 4.26 sq. km area of World’s largest delta.

This epic Delta is formed by Ganga, Brahamputra and Meghna rivers. Sunderbans is largest national park and Tiger reserve forest in India. Proud to mention that it is also a UNESCO world heritage site.

How to reach

Waterway is the only accessible way to the Sunderbans. You have to reach Canning if coming from Kolkata to board organized group trips towards Sunderbans. You can reach Canning through train from Sealdah. If coming through bus, get down at namkhana, Raidigi or Sonakhali from where you can board on motor boats to reach at Sunderbans.

Things to do and see

Sunderbans Tiger Reserve forest has more than 250 Royal Bengal Tigers. Isn’t it thrilling wild!!. Deer and Monkeys are there too on many islands. Crocodile are also often seen at banks. You can also visit the center for conservation of Sea Turtles or go to Haliday Island to see barking deer.

Where to stay

I have stayed in small ships there termed as Vessel which is thrilling in itself. You can stay in private lodges and hotels too like Royal Sunderban Wild Resort. However, I would recommend Sajnekhali Tourist lodge. It is under West Bengal Tourism and has budget accommodation. You can also book tour packages starting from Kolkata exclusively organized by West Bengal tourism Department.

Tip: Please don’t forget to check the weather report and forecast of your destination before living your home to fulfill your wanderlust.

Beautiful but also highly affordable. 3-4 day stay with food would fit within 100 USD budget.
